Series creator Rob Thomas admitted today that the Veronica Mars Movie Kickstarter was only a publicity stunt that got out of hand.
After collecting over 4 million dollars in its first two days, Thomas had to shut down the fundraising project which was originally intended to show network executives that the show remained popular. Unfortunately, part of his plan involved perks that he is now legally obligated to fulfill, despite their lack of economic feasibility.
For instance, the five dollar perk assured funders a DVD copy of the movie, which would be impossible to manufacture and ship at that cost even if there were to be a movie, which Thomas confirms now there will never be. Even more problematic is the $15 perk, which promised $30 to be sent to each buyer. But the real difficulty lies in the special perk for funders over $500, which promised a (chaperoned) date with actress Kristen Bell. Sadly no cap was placed on how many could be bought, and if fulfilled, Ms. Bell would (assuming 30 minutes per date and no break times) be stuck dating fans until May of the year 2985.
So the popularity of the show is confirmed and the Kickstarter is now offline, but the damage is done. With Bell’s impending date-a-thon and the use of studio money to fulfill the impossible perks, there is now no hope we’ll ever see Veronica Mars again. Thomas has also dissolved all plans for Matchbox Twenty tours and recording.
